Neighborhoods Thriving

Week of April 5:

On Sunday, March 22, Ann felt a prompt from the Lord and grabbed a pen and paper.  She sensed that God was encouraging her to invite her neighbors to “meet on the curb and pray.” In just a couple of minutes she had a hand-written note inviting  everyone to come out to the curb on Monday at 7pm.

When she shared the idea with her husband Tom, he initially discouraged her. They knew a good many folks in the neighborhood, but they had never done anything like inviting them all to come to a prayer meeting!  But as they talked about it, Tom shifted his opinion and said, “Let’s just do this and see what God does.”  Their neighborhood consists of three streets with 110 homes, so Tom printed off 110 copies of Ann’s note and they went around the neighborhood and put one at each home.

A few minutes before 7pm the following evening as they got ready to walk out to the curb,  they were still uncertain whether anyone would be out there. As they looked down the street, they began to see neighbors moving down their driveways. Within a few minutes they counted over 40 people on their street.

Since Tom and Ann are in the middle of their block, some people began moving toward their home. Tom and another man prayed out loud and others were encouraged to pray on their own. Afterward people continued to talk for about 1/2 hr. People were so appreciative to Tom & Ann in their comments, some even called the next day or sent a note. In reflecting on the night Tom said, “Before COVID-19, this is not the kind of thing that we would  have thought to do, but our neighbors were more ready than we realized.”

To what kind of invitation are your neighbors ready to respond?  Some other Doxology folks have left cookies on neighbors’ doorsteps with an offer to pray. They are finding neighbors who are now much more open to sharing their needs and requesting prayer.  Other Doxology folks have had neighbors say yes to reading a Christian book on parenting, or even doing a discovery Bible study on fear.

God may be preparing your neighbors for an invitation to engage spiritually. And He is inviting you to join Him!  Like Tom said, “Let’s just do this and see what God does.
