Kingdom Come

Rob James

This is what Kingdom Come looks like in the real world. It's not a program. It's not a strategy. It's what happens when Jesus' grace rules our hearts and we're ready to see the mission field right in front of us.

Think about the word missionary for a second. What image comes to mind?

For many of us, it's someone fearlessly crossing an ocean or trekking through a jungle, bridging language, cultural, and faith gaps. Maybe you picture friends building stoves, digging wells, or offering medical care to those in need. Maybe you’ve thought about being one from time to time.

Those images aren’t wrong, of course. Stories just like this have shaped our faith for centuries. But the mission field isn't just "out there" anymore.

In fact, it’s all around us. For all you know, it might even be right next door at a yard sale on Saturday morning.

Actually, it happened just like that.

Lisa and her husband, Josué, are missionaries with Word of Life Ministries –  Argentina. After several years of ministry and seminary here in Fort Worth, they were preparing to return to Argentina to continue their ministry. Travel is expensive, so a Doxology family lovingly reached out and offered to host a yard sale to help cover their travel expenses. As a result, church friends donated items and showed up on a Saturday morning to help sell them.

Fernando approached the sale as a customer on that Saturday morning. He was browsing the tables when he started asking about prices. Lisa could tell he was hesitant to make a purchase, so she told him that it was okay to pay what he could. "That's the Lord blessing you. We just want to bless you the same way He's blessed us."

Fernando came back a few minutes later to pay, but this time, he stopped to talk.

He told Lisa he'd grown up Catholic but didn't really practice anymore. Faith had always felt like trying to be good enough and he'd never measured up. The church had left wounds. Lisa listened, then gently explained that the gospel isn't about what we do. It's about what Jesus already did.

To illustrate this, she told him about the thief on the cross and how he was a man who had nothing to offer but belief. That was enough for Jesus to say, "Today, you'll be with me in paradise."

Right there, next to a table full of donated dishes and toys, Fernando prayed with Lisa to receive Christ.

Lisa said it best: "Sometimes we think life is about money, work, or what we have, but really it's about Jesus. Our time is short. Because of that, we need to be ready to share the gospel with boldness, and to be salt and light wherever we are."

This is what Kingdom Come looks like in the real world. It's not a program. It's not a strategy. It's what happens when Jesus' grace rules our hearts and we're ready to see the mission field right in front of us.

For Lisa, the mission field was a Saturday morning yard sale.

Fernando's story reminds us that Saturating our City isn't about events or outreach programs. It's about everyday people living as everyday missionaries in their neighborhoods. It's about recognizing that the conversations happening at the yard sale, at the grocery store, or even on the street might be the most important conversation of someone's life.

Where is your mission field today? It might be closer than you think.
